Sneak In Burglary Initiative 2011 - Update

Following this year's joint work by the Police and the Neighbourhood Action Team to highlight sneak in burglaries, we are approaching the anniversary of the period when these offences occurred locally. You will recall that addresses in Sutton on Derwent, Wilberfoss and Stamford Bridge were targeted, with the victims being vulnerable elderly people. Although no offences have occurred in our area over this period this year, offences have occurred elsewhere in the East Riding of Yorkshire and, as a result, we cannot afford to be complacent.

This year's targeted work at Melbourne, Wilberfoss, Stamford Bridge, Sutton on Derwent and Wetwang has been intended to raise awareness and try and prevent similar offences occurring. Overall, it received a very good response.

49% of current domestic burglaries across the East Riding of Yorkshire are as a result of insecurities in the home (doors and windows). Over the last few days, PCSOs have been visiting a number of sites in our two wards again highlighting the message we put have out in respect of sneak in burglaries over the last few months.

Please can I ask that you spread this message out to as many people as possible.

1. Please be vigilant. Report any suspicious persons or vehicles in your neighbourhood.

2. Please ensure that doors and windows are ALWAYS secured when you leave your home unattended

3. Consider home security even when you're at home. If you're out in the garden and are leaving doors and windows insecure whilst they're out of view, you are giving an opportunist thief a chance. Similarly, when in bed on a night, if you leave downstairs windows open, someone could take advantage.

BURGLARY ALERT - POCKLINGTON

Overnight Saturday 3rd to Sunday 4th September, an unsuccessful attempt was made to burgle a house on South Parade, The Balk, Pocklington, with offender(s) attempting to enter premises by climbing up to a first floor window and then breaking a lock at the house at the rear of the premises.

Please can everyone be aware of this incident as it is the first attempted domestic burglary we have had in our area for some time.

If anyone sees anything suspicious (vehicles or people) near residential premises, please give the police a ring on 0845 60 60 222 (or 999 if a crime is in progress).

Fortunately, this house was secure. However, this incident highlights the fact that offenders are in our area and the necessity of ensuring that doors and windows are secure in houses when unattended. Please spread the word: "Think Home Security!"

Can all groups circulate as widely as possible.

Thanks
