New Crime & Policing Act 2014

The Crime and Policing Act 2014 received Royal Assent on 13 March 2014 and is expected to come into force sometime in the Summer.

The schematic below shows how the Act replaces 19 existing tools and powers with six new measures aimed at putting victims at the heart of the response to anti-social behaviour and giving professionals the flexibility they need to deal with any given situation.

In addition, the Act introduces a Community Trigger whereby members of the public, or a representative with their consent, can instigate a review of their case providing that a local agreed threshold has been met. Agencies including councils, the police, local health teams and registered providers of social housing will have a duty to undertake the case review if the threshold has been met, with further action taken, if necessary.

Early intervention tools, which are used successfully in the East Riding, will not be affected by the Act. The Police and Crime Commissioner must produce a Community Remedy, giving victims more say in what the offender must do if they behave anti socially or commit certain offences, such as criminal damage.
